On the little island of Egilsay stands this roofless 12th-century church with a tall, tapering round tower — a rare survival, unusual anywhere in Scotland. It’s said to mark the spot where Earl Magnus was killed around 1116, before he was made a saint and the cathedral in Kirkwall was raised in his name. Open access, reached by ferry to Egilsay.
