Substantial ruinsruined, but plenty survives above ground

Below the mound carrying Cobbie Row’s Castle, St Mary’s Chapel sits roofless in a walled burial ground that the island still uses. It went up in the later 1100s, probably for the same Norse family that built the castle — a nave about six metres long, a chancel not much bigger than a cupboard, and a round-arched doorway that has survived better than anything else here. Wyre is reached by Orkney Ferries from Kirkwall, and the chapel is half a mile up from the pier. Free, open whenever you get there; boots are worth having.
