Scapa Flow is the huge sheltered harbour at the heart of Orkney, ringed by the southern isles. It was Britain’s main naval base in both world wars, and in June 1919 the interned German High Seas Fleet was scuttled here by its own crews. Most of the ships were later salvaged, but the wrecks that remain make this one of the world’s great scuba-diving sites. Viewpoints ring the shore, diving is by charter boat, and the whole story is told at the Scapa Flow Museum.
