Ornate chapel built by wartime prisoners.
During the Second World War, Italian prisoners held on Lamb Holm to build the Churchill Barriers turned two Nissen huts into this extraordinary little chapel. The artist Domenico Chiocchetti led the decoration, painting the sanctuary and fashioning details from scrap — a font from a car exhaust, light holders from corned-beef tins. He stayed on to finish the work after the other prisoners had left. It’s open to visitors for a small charge, beside the first Churchill Barrier, and one of Orkney’s signature sights.
