Orkney’s third-largest settlement, St Margaret’s Hope is a waterfront village of old stone houses on South Ronaldsay, reached by road across the Churchill Barriers from the Mainland. Each August the Sands of Wright nearby host the Festival of the Horse and the Boys’ Ploughing Match, a local tradition going back at least a couple of centuries. The Murray Arms Hotel does good seafood.
