Founded in 1137, St Magnus Cathedral rises in red and yellow sandstone right at the heart of Kirkwall. Earl Rögnvald raised it in honour of his uncle, St Magnus, and it’s still a working church today, often called the Light in the North. Entry is free, and the interior — worn medieval stone, old memorials, the bones of the saint himself in a pillar — is well worth a look.
