Tucked in a valley on Hoy, Berriedale is often called the most northerly native woodland in Britain — a scrappy little stand of birch, rowan and aspen, much of it barely taller than head height thanks to the wind. It’s a botanical curiosity more than a grand forest. Reaching it means walking in on the Hoy hill paths, and Hoy itself is a ferry ride from the Mainland.
