A stone-built harbour town on the west Mainland, Stromness has one winding flagstone street that hugs the shore, with narrow lanes branching off towards the water. It’s Orkney’s second town and the arrival point for the NorthLink ferry from Scrabster. Worth a look are the Pier Arts Centre, with its collection of twentieth-century British art, and the Stromness Museum. The Ferry Inn is handy for a pint by the harbour.
