Places to explore in East LothianScotland · Central Scotland
East of Edinburgh, the land flattens into some of Scotland's most fertile farmland, edged by long sandy bays and championship golf links. Volcanic rock breaks through as North Berwick Law and the Bass Rock, a white-capped gannet colony offshore. The red sandstone Tantallon Castle faces it across the water, a Douglas stronghold set on the cliff edge. The harbour town of North Berwick and the castle at Dirleton anchor the coast, while the John Muir Way runs west from Dunbar, where the pioneering conservationist was born in 1838.
