You can still trace Haddington’s medieval market place, an open triangle, in Court Street, High Street, Market Street and Hardgate, and William Adam designed the Town House there in the 1740s. The town was made a royal burgh under David I in the 1100s, and Alexander II was born here in 1198; John Knox probably was too. Down by the Tyne, St Mary’s, built between 1380 and 1462, is the longest parish church in Scotland at 206 feet, and its choir stood roofless until the 1970s. Jane Welsh Carlyle, the letter writer, grew up here and is buried inside. Across the 16th-century Nungate Bridge is the roofless St Martin’s Kirk, and Lennoxlove House is half a mile south.
