Substantial ruinsruined, but plenty survives above ground

A shell of a parish church from the mid-1100s, which is rarer than it sounds — very few Scottish parish churches survive from the century the parish system was set up. The roofless nave is all there is now, the chancel having gone at the Reformation. Look for traces of barrel vaulting at the west end and the six thick buttresses added in the 1200s. St Martin’s stood by the gate of Haddington’s Cistercian nunnery, which has vanished entirely. Open access, no charge; St Mary’s Collegiate Church upriver is the working one.
