In the Square at East Linton, a cast-iron fountain of 1882 has four little figures of children holding vases that pour water, under a scalloped canopy. The village is named after the linn, a waterfall on the River Tyne, and its two-arched bridge was standing by 1560, after French troops destroyed the earlier one in 1549 to slow a retreating English army. Prestonkirk Parish Church has a tower of 1631, and the engineer John Rennie was born at Phantassie in 1761. Just outside the village are two National Trust for Scotland properties, Preston Mill, on a site milled since 1599, and the Phantassie Doocot (dovecote). The ruin of Hailes Castle is a mile and a half south-west on the Tyne.
