John Muir, the naturalist who did so much to create America’s national parks, was born in Dunbar in 1838; his birthplace on the High Street is now a small free museum. Beyond it there’s a colourful working harbour, the ruins of Dunbar Castle right above it, and the cliffs and sands running towards Belhaven. Handy too — Dunbar sits on the East Coast Main Line, so trains from Edinburgh are quick.
