A cluster of stone cottages set around a broad green, Dirleton is often called one of the prettiest villages in Scotland. Its castle is the draw — a 13th-century stronghold whose Arts and Crafts garden is reckoned to hold the world’s longest herbaceous border. The Open Arms and Castle Inn both look onto the green. North Berwick station is about 3km north-east.
