Places to explore in Shetland IslandsScotland · Highlands and Islands

Britain's northernmost land, Shetland is an archipelago of more than a hundred islands, closer to Bergen than to Edinburgh. The rock is old and hard, the coast bitten into cliffs, stacks and geos, and trees are all but absent. The Norse past is everywhere, most vividly at Jarlshof, where four thousand years of settlement lie in one place, and in the near-perfect Iron Age tower of Mousa. Seabirds throng the headlands at Sumburgh Head, Noss and the gannet cliffs of Hermaness. The pale sand tombolo of St Ninian's Isle and the red lava cliffs of Eshaness rank among Scotland's finest coast.
