Off the northern tip of Unst, Muckle Flugga is a rock stack crowned by Britain’s most northerly lighthouse, built by Thomas and David Stevenson and first lit in 1858. Thomas’s son Robert Louis Stevenson visited as a young man, and Unst is said to have inspired the map in Treasure Island. There’s no landing on the rock — you see it from the Hermaness clifftops, with Out Stack beyond as the very last speck of Britain.
