The Shetland Museum and Archives, at Hay’s Dock on the Lerwick waterfront, tells the islands’ story from geology and the Vikings through the herring boom to the oil age. It’s free, five-star rated, and has a cafe with harbour views — a great rainy-day standby, and a good first stop for getting your bearings on Shetland.
