Bakewell is the Peak District’s only true market town, set where an arched medieval bridge crosses the Wye. It gave its name to the Bakewell pudding, a pastry case of jam under an almond-rich egg filling that several shops still claim to bake to the original recipe. Monday is market day, and the town makes the busiest base in the central Peak.
