The Peacock was built in 1652 as a manor house for John Stevenson, steward to nearby Haddon Hall, and later served as a dower house before opening as a hotel in 1832; the Manners family’s peacock crest gave it its name. It stands at Rowsley where the Wye joins the Derwent, and is known for fly-fishing on both rivers and for a smart restaurant. It’s a country-house hotel now rather than a drop-in local.
