Haddon Hall is about as complete a medieval and Tudor manor house as survives in England, having escaped the Georgian rebuilding that reshaped grander houses. It stands above the Wye a couple of miles south of Bakewell, long held by the Manners family, Dukes of Rutland. The terraced gardens step down towards the river in a series of walled Elizabethan terraces, planted with roses, clematis and delphiniums against the old stone. Open seasonally on a paid ticket; Matlock station is around 9km to the south-east.
