The Chatsworth estate’s farm shop sits in the model village of Pilsley, a couple of miles from the great house. Deborah, Duchess of Devonshire, started it in 1977, and more than half of what fills the shelves is reared or made on the estate — beef, lamb, venison and pheasant over the butcher’s counter, alongside bread, patisserie and game. Anyone can shop or eat in the café; a good stock-up on the way to or from Bakewell.
