A limestone village strung along the River Wye, Ashford-in-the-Water is best known for Sheepwash Bridge, a narrow packhorse crossing with a walled pen beside it where sheep were once washed in the river before shearing. The village still keeps up the Peak tradition of well dressing each summer. The Ashford Arms sits in the centre. Grindleford station is about 11km to the north-east.
