Grindleford lies in the wooded Derwent Valley below Padley Gorge, a steep tumble of oak and boulder that makes a fine short walk up from the river. The station café, at the mouth of the long Totley Tunnel, is a walkers’ institution, known for mugs of strong tea and a no-nonsense welcome. Trains on the Hope Valley line stop right beside it.
