George Lawrence, a Sheffield razor-blade maker, paid for this pool and gave it to Hathersage in 1936; he was killed in the Sheffield Blitz four years later. The pool is 30 metres by 12, with the original bandstand still standing beside the water and a solarium whose glass panels were designed to let ultraviolet light through, in the 1930s fashion for sunbathing for health. The water is heated to about 27°C and the pool opens all year, on a summer timetable from April to October and a winter one after that. Sessions are booked online, and the parish council runs the pool for the King George’s Field charity. Stanage Edge, the long gritstone edge on the moor, is a couple of kilometres north-east, so a walk and a warm swim go well together. Hathersage station is about 300m south.
