Charlotte Brontë stayed at the vicarage here in 1845 and borrowed the village — as Morton — and nearby North Lees Hall for Jane Eyre. Hathersage sits below the gritstone wall of Stanage Edge, long a magnet for climbers, and its churchyard holds a long grave said to be Little John’s. Trains stop at Hathersage, a short walk from the centre on the Hope Valley line.
