The great gritstone edge above the Peak, three miles of climbing.
Stanage Edge is the long gritstone escarpment above Hathersage, running for about four miles along the moor’s rim and widely regarded as the birthplace of British rock climbing, with hundreds of named routes on its buttresses. Walkers get an easier deal, following the crest for miles of open moorland. Abandoned millstones lie in the bracken below the rocks. Hathersage station is under 3km to the south-west.
