Magpie Mine is the best-preserved lead mine in Britain, standing out on open fields above Sheldon. Its round Cornish engine house of 1869 and tall chimney survive alongside the winding gear, agent’s house and smithy, giving an almost complete picture of a Victorian lead mine. Worked on and off from the 1700s, it was the last lead mine in Derbyshire when it finally closed in 1958. The Peak District Mines Historical Society looks after it, and the site is open to walk around.
