Chatsworth has been the seat of the Dukes of Devonshire since the 1550s, and its garden runs to about 105 acres above the Derwent. The Cascade, a stepped run of water dropping down the hillside, dates from the 1690s, while the Emperor Fountain was added by Joseph Paxton in 1844 and once threw a jet close to 90m; it now reaches around 60m. Paxton also built the rock garden. The estate village of Edensor sits within the park, with Baslow just to the north. House and garden are open most of the year on a paid ticket.
