Behind Birchover, a jumble of gritstone outcrops was turned into a private retreat by a local parson, Thomas Eyre, who cut steps, seats and small rooms into the rock around the turn of the 18th century. Rocking stones and carved cup-marks add to the oddness. It sits just above the village church and is free to wander, though the steps get slippery when wet.
