Long before Lincoln had its cathedral, Stow was the minster church for this part of Lindsey, and tradition still calls it the mother church of Lincoln Cathedral. What survives is a great cruciform building, part Anglo-Saxon and part Norman, with the tallest Saxon arches of their date in Britain and a scratched Viking longship on one wall. Earl Leofric and Lady Godiva endowed it in the 1050s. It stands in the quiet village of Stow, open to visitors.
