Triple-towered giant crowning the hilltop city.
With its central spire in place, Lincoln Cathedral was the tallest building in the world for well over two centuries — the first structure to overtake the Great Pyramid — until the spire came down in 1548. Even without it, the triple-towered Gothic church still crowns the hilltop city and can be seen for miles across the plain below. Begun in the 11th century and largely rebuilt by St Hugh after a 12th-century earthquake, it ranks among England’s great medieval cathedrals, and is open to visitors most days. Lincoln Central station sits about a kilometre downhill.
