Robert Smythson finished Doddington Hall in 1600, an Elizabethan house of walled courtyards and a gabled gatehouse a few miles west of Lincoln, still lived in and never once sold. The gardens sit inside the original Tudor walls: box and yew topiary, a west-garden parterre laid out around 1900, long herbaceous borders and a kitchen garden that supplies the cafes. Hall and gardens open through the season.
