West of Lincoln, Whisby is a set of old gravel pits reclaimed by nature and now run by the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust — lakes, scrub and heath threaded with walking trails. It’s best known for its nightingales, which sing from the scrub through April and May, and for dragonflies over the water in summer. There’s a visitor centre with a café, and Hykeham station is about 3km east.
