Reckoned one of the finest churches in Lincolnshire, St Helen’s was already first-rate — a tall medieval spire over a handsome village — when the Victorian architect G.F. Bodley got to work. Between 1874 and 1876 he rebuilt the chancel and filled it with a painted vault and a gilded reredos, an unusually lavish piece of High Victorian church art. The village of Brant Broughton rewards a wander around it. Open to visitors.
