One of the largest parish churches in England, St Mary Magdalene rises over the market place at Newark-on-Trent on a spire of Lincolnshire limestone that tops 236 feet — the tallest in Nottinghamshire, its upper stages finished around 1350. Inside are medieval chantry chapels and a painted screen. Free to look round, and Newark Castle station is only a few hundred metres to the north-west.
