Gunthorpe grew up at a long-used crossing of the Trent, where a ferry worked before the first road bridge came in 1875. The present three-span concrete bridge, opened by the Prince of Wales in 1927, still carries the road over, and the riverside by the lock stays busy with boats, walkers and a couple of pubs. Lowdham station is a little over 1km to the north-west.
