A rare survivor: Bagthorpe Gardens is a row of detached town gardens laid out in 1842 so Nottingham’s lace-makers and framework knitters could grow food and get some air away from the crowded city, with a scatter of small brick garden sheds — bothies — still standing among the plots. Around half the original sixty gardens remain, and they’re still worked as allotments today. The gates stay locked to casual visitors, but plot-holders open up for tours on Heritage Open Days each September.
