Lord Byron lies in the family vault beneath the chancel here, and his daughter Ada Lovelace — the mathematician often called the first computer programmer — is buried alongside him. The church itself is worth a look for the glass: one of the largest collections of stained glass anywhere by Charles Eamer Kempe, most of it added in the 1880s. Open and free, with Hucknall station a few minutes’ walk to the east. Byron’s ancestral home, Newstead Abbey, is a little way to the north.
