Come on one of the eight or so steaming weekends a year to see Papplewick Pumping Station at work: two rotative beam engines built by James Watt & Co in 1884, set among ornate iron columns and stained glass. It was raised to draw water for a growing Nottingham, and now runs as a museum, open on quieter days through the summer as well. The village of Papplewick lies just to the west.
