Known today as St Ann’s Allotments, this is reckoned the largest and oldest area of Victorian detached town gardens anywhere, dating back to land granted to Nottingham’s corporation in 1551. Generations of plot-holders built ornamental summerhouses among the vegetable beds, hundreds of which survive. It’s still a working allotment site rather than a park, so casual access is limited — the visitor centre opens weekday mornings, with guided tours and two open days a year run by the STAA charity. Nottingham Castle is a couple of kilometres south-west.
