Known locally as the Rock Cemetery for the sandstone caves cut into its slopes, Church Cemetery opened in 1856 on a hillside that had previously served as a quarry and a place of public execution. Edwin Patchitt laid it out for Nottingham’s rapidly growing population, and the result is a genuinely atmospheric wander, all winding paths and rock-cut recesses among the headstones. It’s open daily, free, at the usual cemetery hours. Nottingham Castle is under 2km south.
