Wollaton Hall is an Elizabethan showpiece — a “prodigy house” built between 1580 and 1588 to Robert Smythson’s design for Sir Francis Willoughby, standing on a rise above Nottingham with turrets and a great glazed hall on top. It has held the city’s Natural History Museum since 1926, and a herd of deer roams the walled park around it. Free to walk the grounds; Beeston station is about 3km to the south.
