Richly endowed by William Peverel in about 1106, Lenton became one of the most important religious houses in the Midlands — and barely a stone of it stands. What is left: a metre of Norman pier at the corner of Priory Street and Old Church Street, and a stretch of the priory church’s north wall reused as a boundary. Everything else lies buried under Lenton’s streets. The small Priory Church of St Anthony alongside began as the priory’s hospital chapel and is still a working parish church. Free to look at; Nottingham Castle is two miles north-east.
