Ye Olde Salutation Inn stands near the castle at the corner of Hounds Gate, a timber-framed alehouse whose oldest fabric has been tree-ring dated to the 1430s. Beneath it lies one of the largest of Nottingham’s sandstone cave-cellars, cut on two levels with stone shelves once used to keep food and ale cool. Like the Bell and the Trip, it lays claim to being the city’s oldest. Nottingham station is about 600m to the south-east.
