Cut into the sandstone cliff below Nottingham Castle, Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem claims to be the oldest inn in England. The date of 1189 usually attached to it is legend rather than record — the present building is 17th-century — but the cave cellars behind the bar are genuinely ancient, part of Nottingham’s honeycomb of rock chambers and long used to store ale. It is half a kilometre from the station, and worth a look inside whatever the age.
