Papplewick is a wooded estate village on the fringe of old Sherwood north of Nottingham, where the church of St James stands in the grounds of Papplewick Hall. Just to the west is Papplewick Pumping Station, an ornate Victorian waterworks full of polished beam engines and stained glass, open on its steaming days. Hucknall station is about 2km south-west.
