Newstead Abbey was Lord Byron’s ancestral home, an Augustinian priory of the 1160s turned into a house after the Dissolution — the west front of the old priory church still stands as a ruin against it. The grounds are the reason most people come: lakes and cascades fed by the River Leen, a walled garden, and a Japanese garden laid out in the 1890s. The house opens mainly at weekends, and Newstead station is a couple of kilometres away. Byron himself is buried at Hucknall nearby.
