One of the best-preserved medieval manor houses in England stands, a little unexpectedly, in the middle of Gainsborough. Sir Thomas Burgh began building it around 1460, and it keeps its great timber-roofed hall and a huge original kitchen, its two hearths each big enough to roast an ox. Richard III was entertained here in 1484. English Heritage runs it and it’s open to visitors; Gainsborough Central station is only a few minutes’ walk to the east.
