Local tradition has Shakespeare’s parents, John Shakespeare and Mary Arden, marrying at the church of St John the Baptist here in the 1550s, with the wedding breakfast held at the King’s Head on the green. The half-timbered village sits on the River Alne, and that medieval inn still trades. Wootton Wawen station is about 2.5km north.
