The eight-arched stone bridge over the Avon at Bidford was built by monks in the fifteenth century, replacing an older ford. Shakespeare’s rhyme remembers the place as ‘Drunken Bidford’, after a contest with the village’s drinkers. There are greens and riverside walks along both banks, and Welford-on-Avon, with its tall maypole, lies a short way upstream.
